The URL structure that you use for your pages will weigh heavily in the search results rankings. Google will also display at least part of the URL in search results, below your main listing. In the same way as in the description tag, Google will show terms in the URL that match the user query in bold. The closer your URL structure is to the search query of a user the better.

Optimised URL Structure

  • Include your key terms in the URL
  • Use-a-dash-between-each-keyword
  • Keep URLs short. Long URLs look spammy and there is evidence to show users are more likely to click on short URLs.
  • Always use lower case URLs
  • Remember your visitors may email, write down or even try to remember your page URL.
  • Avoid dynamic URLs with lots of symbols and numbers. Search engines and humans prefer static words
